The Mátai Stud Farm

With nearly 250 horses, the Mátai Stud Farm is one of Hungary's most significant and largest traditional horse breeding centers. Founded by the free royal city of Debrecen, the main mission of the stud farm is the preservation and breeding of the traditional Hungarian Nonius breed, which was declared a national treasure in 2004. The stud farm is also of great tourism importance, as it is the starting point for the "plains carting" attraction, which draws the most visitors to Hortobágy. And if you haven’t yet attended the Hortobágy Equestrian Days, which attract thousands of visitors to the region, don’t miss the celebration of horses and equestrian sports!

The stud’s reception building houses an interactive exhibition on the history of the stud and a gift shop. The northern wing contains the horse stables, while across from it is the workshop of the famous Nádudvar potter, József K. Nagy, whose works can be purchased on-site. A unique feature of the central stable is the Nyerges Café, where, uniquely in the country, you can peek into the everyday life of the stables through a glass wall. Children can enjoy the playground next to the café.

Directions:

From Debrecen, take Route 33 through the town of Hortobágy, cross the Nine-Hole Bridge, and take the first right turn.

From Tiszafüred, take Route 33 just before the town of Hortobágy, before the Nine-Hole Bridge, and take the first left turn.

After turning off from Route 33, follow the road, and the Mátai Stud Farm is located 2.5 km away.

The stables on the farm are open to visitors during operating hours.
