Hortobágy Fishponds
The entire area of the Hortobágy Fishponds has been part of the Hortobágy National Park since its establishment in 1973. In addition, the area of the ponds is listed on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, is a designated Important Bird Area (IBA), part of the World Heritage Site, and is also a Natura 2000 area, which is of European community significance for nature conservation.
By walking along the Hortobágy Fishponds nature trail, visitors can become familiar with the birdlife and plant life of the Hortobágy fishponds and open water marshes. Since the area is one of Central Europe's and Hortobágy's most important habitats for waterfowl, visitors will gain detailed insight into the nesting and migratory waterfowl communities of the Carpathian Basin. Along the trail, visitors may also encounter many endangered waterfowl species from Central Europe. In addition to expanding knowledge of species, visitors will also get an insight into the working processes of fishpond management and some aspects of habitat management for conservation purposes. A national park entrance card (daily or weekly) is required to visit the nature trail.
