Dark Sky Park
"Hortobágy: Where the Sky Meets the Earth" Hortobágy is a place where the view remains almost undisturbed from horizon to horizon, offering stargazers unforgettable experiences under the Milky Way or the Zodiacal Light.
Since the second half of the 20th century, urbanization has led to a dramatic increase in light pollution during nighttime. As a result, only a few places in Hungary remain where one can find a starry sky free from intrusive artificial light.
Reducing light pollution is not only crucial for economic and environmental reasons but also because of its harmful effects on wildlife. Many birds are injured due to disorientation and collisions caused by light pollution, and entire insect populations can disappear from newly illuminated areas. Disrupting the natural nighttime environment can significantly impact ecosystems, altering the behavior and functioning of living organisms.
To combat these harmful effects, dark sky parks have been established. These are areas where light pollution is minimal, preserving both the natural environment and the night sky.
In 2011, Hortobágy National Park became the second location in Hungary to receive the designation of an International Dark Sky Park.
